An eleven year old Laura is enumerated in her parent's household in Sandy Hook. It is a farm, but it is currently mortgaged. Her parents, who had been married 27 years, are currently putting three of their children, Guy, Laura, and Ray, through school. Jerome notes that he is a farmer and an employer. Laura's brother Wilbur and Guy are currently farm laborers for their father.

18 year old Laura married 22 year old Martin Dineen Welsh, of Bakerton, on a Friday at Hagerstown. The Rev. Earnest W. Aaron, of the Methodist Church at Shenandoah Junction, presided over their marriage. Martin, the son of Thomas Buchanon and Margaret "Maggie" Virginia Flanagan Welsh, was probably teaching school at Dargan Graded School during the time of their marriage.
