October 24, 2025Martin Grace, a native of Ireland, yesterday applied to the Court to be permitted to become a citizen of the United States, whereupon, the said Martin Grace exhibited a certificate of the Clerk of the Court of the County of Frederick in the State of Maryland showing that he arrived in the United States more than five years previous to the date hereof, which certificate is as follows: “I, Martin Grace, in compliance with an act of Congress, passed on the 14th day of April, 1802, do hereby report to the clerk of Frederick County Court, my name as aforesaid that I was born in the County of Kilkenny, in Ireland under the Dominion of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and am of the age of thirty years, that I owe allegiance to the King aforesaid, that I migrated from Waterford in Ireland and arrived in Baltimore, State of Maryland. I have and intend settling in Frederick County in the State of Maryland, witness my hand this first day of November, 1830. Martin Grace.
And the said Martin Grace also exhibited a certificate of the Clerk of said Court of Frederick County, Maryland that more than two years ago he had declared on oath in the said Court, his intention to become a citizen of the United States: which last mentioned certificate is in these words: “Martin Grace appears in Court here this first day of November 1830 and upon his corporal oath pursuant to an act of Congress, passed on the 14th day of April 1802 entitled “an act to establish an uniform rule of naturalization and to repeal the acts heretofore passed on that subject” declares that it is bona fide his intention to become a citizen of the United States, and to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty, whatever, and particularly to the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland to whom he is subject.”
And it being proved to the satisfaction of the Court by the testimony of Sam’l W. Lackland and Eli H. Carrell, citizens of the said United States, who were examined as witnesses on oath that since the arrival of the said Martin Grace as aforesaid, he has resided within the United States five years at least, and within this State one year at least, and during that time has behaved as a man of good moral character, attached to the principles of the constitution of the United States, and weill disposed to the good order and happenings of the same, he the said Martin Grace declared on oath in open Court, that he will support the constitution of the United States and that he doth absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign Prince, Potentate, State, Sovereignty whatever, and particularly to William IV king of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. And thereupon the said Martin Grace was admitted a citizen of the United States.
