October 23, 2025Thomas Kervan a native of Ireland this day applied to the Court to be admitted to become a citizen of the United States. Whereupon the said Thomas Kervan exhibits a certificate of the Clerk of the Court of Jefferson County Virginia showing that he arrived in the United States more than five years previous to the date hereof, which certificate is as follows:
Virginia, Jefferson County to wit: In the County Court October Term 1844.
At a court continued and held for the said County, on the 22nd day of October 1844. Thomas Kerwan, an alien, who has lately arrived in the United States and is desirious of being naturalized a citizen thereof appeared in Court, yesterday and made a report of himself which report is in these words: “I, Thomas Kerwan, make the followng report of myself to the County Court of Jefferson County, in the State of Virginia, that is to say, I report that I was born in Ireland, that I am a subject of Victoria 1st Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, owing allegiance to that Monarch and none other, that I emigrated from Ireland to the United States in the year 1826, and that I intend to settle myself in the state of Virginia one of the United States. Given under my hand this 21st day of October, 1844. (signed} Thos. Kirwan.
And it appearing that more than two years ago he declared on oath in the said County Court of Jefferson his intention to become a citizen of the United States in these words to wit: And the said Thomas Kirwan declared on oath yesterday in open court, that it is bona fide his intention to become a citizen of the United States, and to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State, or Sovereignty whatever, and particularly to Victoria 1st Queen of Great Britain & Ireland. And it being proved to the satisfaction of the Court by the testimony of Isaac Fouke and William Walsh citizens of the United States who were examined as witnesses on oath that since the arrival of the said Thomas Kerwan as aforesaid he has resided in the United States at least five years, and within this state at least one year, and during that time has behaved as a man of good moral character, attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States, and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same, the said Thomas Kirwan declared on oath in open Court that he will support the Constitution of the United States, and that he doth absolutely and entirely renounce all & abjust all allegiances and fidelity to every foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty, whatever and particularly to Victoria 1st Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. All therefore the said Thomas Kerwan is admitted a citizen of the United States.
