October 23, 2025James Bergin, a native of Ireland, this day applied to the Court to be admitted to become a citizen of the United States; whereupon the said James Bergin, exhibited a certificate of the Clerk of the County Court of Jefferson County, showing that he arrived in the United States more than five years previous to the date hereof, which certificate is as follows: Virginia, Jefferson County Court; At a Court held for Jefferson County, on the 19th day of March A. D. 1838, James Bergin, an alien, who has lately arrived in the United States, and is desirous of being naturalized a citizen thereof, this day appeared in Court, and in persuance of the Act of Congress, made a report of himself in these words, I, James Bergin, make the following report of myself to the County Court of Jefferson, State of Virginia, That is to say, I was born in the County of Tyrone, in the Kingdom of Ireland, on the 22nd of June 1804, being now in the 34th year of my age, that I am a subject of the Queen of England, owing allegiance to her Majesty and no others; That I migrated to the United States in the year 1827, and that I intend to settle in the state of Virginia, the same being one of the United States. Given under my hand this 19th day of March 1838. James Bergin. And the said James Bergin also exhibits a certificate of the Clerk of the Court aforesaid, that more than two years ago he had declared, on oath, in the said Court, his intention to become a citizen of the United States, which last mentioned certificate is in the words: “And the said James Bergin declared on oath that it is bona fide his intention to become a citizen of the United States, and renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, State, or Sovereignty whatever, and particularly to Victoria 1st Queen of Great Britain and Ireland. Testo S. J. Cramer, A copy, Testo S. J. Cramer C.C. And it being proved to the satisfaction of the Court, by the testimony of Fontaine Beckham, Joseph L. Rupell, & George W. Sappington citizens the said United States, who were examined as witnesses on oath, that since the arrival of the said James Bergin, as aforesaid, he has resided within the United States five years at least, and within the State one year at least, and during that time has behaved as a man of good moral character, attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States, and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same, he the said James Bergin declared, on oath, in open Court, that he will support the Constitution of the United States, and that he doth absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to every foregin Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatver, and particularly to Victoria the first Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and therefore the said James Bergin is admitted a citizen of the said United States.
