October 24, 2025Patrick O’Byrne, a native of Ireland, this day applied to the Court to be admitted to become a citizen of the United States, whereupon the said Patrick O’Byrne exhibited a certificate of the Clerk of the County Court of Washington County, in the State of Maryland, showing that he arrived in the United States more than five years previous to the date hereof, which certificate is as follows. “State of Maryland, Washington County, to wit: At a County Court of the fifth judicial District of the State of Maryland, began and holden at Hagerstown in and for the County aforesaid on the eighteenth day of November, being the third Monday of the same month in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty two, were present. The Honorable John Buchanan Esq. chief judge, Abraham Shower, & Thomas Buchanan Esq., associate judges. John G. Swearingen, Esq. Sheriff. C. H. Williams lk: In the record of the proceedings of the said Court amongst others in the following, to wit: I, Patrick O’Byrne do hereby make the following report of myself to the clerk of Washington County Court. I arrived in the United States in the month of September in the year 1819. I migrated from the County of Roscommon in Ireland, the place of my birth, have borne in allegiance to the king of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and intend settling in Washington County, Maryland. Given under my hand this 25th day of November 1822. Patrick O’Byrne. Teste George R. Beall. And the said Patrick O’Byrne also exhibited a certificate of the Clerk of Washington County Court, State of Maryland that more than two years ago he had declared on oath in the said Court his intention to become a citizen of the United States, which last mentioned certificate is in these words. “At the same time the said Patrick O’Byrne appeared in open court and made oath on the Holy Evangelly of Almighty God that it is bona fide his intention to become a citizen of the United States. That he doth renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty whatever and particularly to the king of Great Britain and Ireland. Teste. G. H. Williams. And the court being satisfied that since the arrival of the said Patrick O’Byrne as aforesaid, he has resided within the United States five years at least and within this State one year at least, and during that time has behaved as a man of good moral character attached to the principles of the constitution of the United States, well disposed to the good order and happenings of the same, he the said Patrick O’Byrne declared on oath, in open court, that he will support the constitution of the United States, and that he doth absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all fidelity and allegiance to every foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatever and particular to William IV, king of the United Kingdom of Britain and Ireland, and thereupon the said Patrick O’Byrne is admitted a citizen of the United States.
