October 23, 2025Thomas Sturdy, a native of Ireland, this day applied to the Court to be admitted to become a citizen of the United States; Whereupon it appearing to the Court that the said Thomas Sturdy, in the 8th day of June 1838 made a report of himself to this Court, which report is of record and is in these words, Court: “Thomas Sturdy, an alien, who has lately arrived in the United States, and is desirous of being naturalized a citizen thereof, this day appeared in Court, and in persuance of the act of Congress made a report of himself; which report is in the following words, to wit: I Thomas Sturdy make the following report of myself to the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery for Jefferson County in the State of Virginia, that is to say, I report that I was born in the County of Fermaugh in Ireland in the year 1810 as I have understood, being now about twenty eight years of age, that I am a subject of the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, owing allegiance to that monarch and none other, hat I migrated from Ireland in the year 1828, and that I intend to settle myself at Harpers Ferry in the State of Virginia, one of the United States. Given under my hand this 8th day of June 1838. Thomas Sturdy.” And it appearing also to the Court that the said Thomas Sturdy more than two years ago, to wit on the said 8th day of June 1838 declared on oath in this Court, his intentions to become a citizen of the United States, which said declaration is of record, and is in these words, to wit: ” And the said Thomas Sturdy this day declared on oath, that it is bonafide his intention to become a citizen of the United States, and to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatever, and particularly to Queen Victoria, Sovereign of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.” And it being proved to the satisfaction of the Court by the testimony of Fontaine Beckham, Joseph L. Rupell, George W. Sappington and Isaac Fouke, citizens of the said United States, who were examined as witnesses, on oath, that since the arrival of he said Thomas Sturdy as aforesaid he has resided within the United States five years at least, and within this state one year at least, and during that time has behaved as a man of good moral character, attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United Staes, and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same, he the said Thomas Sturdy declared, on oath, in open court, that he will support the Constitution of the United States and that he doth absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign Prince, Potentate, State, or Sovereignty whatever, and particularly to Victoria the first Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. And thereupon the said Thomas Sturdy is admitted a citizen of the said United States.
