Naturalization Intent: Peter Divine

Peter Divine, an alien, who has lately arrived in the United States and is desirous of being naturalized a citizen thereof, this day appeared in Court, and in pursuance of the act of Congress made a report of himself, which report is in the following words, to wit: “I Peter Divine make the following report of myself to the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery of Jefferson County in the State of Virginia, that is to say, I report that I was born in the County of Latrim [Leitrim] Ireland, on the first of November in the year 1804 being now in the 37th year of my age, that I am a subject of Victoria Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, owing allegiance to that monarch and none other; that I migrated from Ireland to the United States in the year 1836, and that I intend to settle myself in Harpers Ferry in the State of Virginia, one of the United States.– Given under my hand this 9th day of November 1840 — his mark, Peter Divine.

And therefore the said Peter Divine declared upon oath in open Court, that it is bonafide his intention to become a citizen of the United States, and to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatever, and particularly to Queen Victoria Sovereign of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
