October 25, 2025Patrick McGuire, a native of Ireland, this day applied to the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery for Jefferson County in the State of Virginia, to be admitted to become a citizen of the United States. Whereupon the said Patrick McGuire exhibited a certificate of the Clerk of the District Court of the United States in and for the Maryland district, which certificate is in these words, “United States of America, District of Maryland, To wit: District Court Office, Baltimore September 21st. 1838.– Be it remembered, that on the day of the date hereof, personally appeared in the Clerk’s office of the District Court of the United States, in and for the Maryland District, Patrick McGuire, a native of Ireland, and at present residing in the City of Baltimore, who made oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God, that it is bona fide his intention to become a citizen of the United States, and to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign Prince, Potentate, State, and Sovereignty whatever, and particularly all allegiance and fidelity to the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name and affix the seal of the said District Court this 21st day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty eight. Thos. Spicer. MD District. And it being proved to the satisfaction of the Court, by the testimony of Thomas H. Perdue and citizen of the United States who was examined as a witness on oath, that since the arrival of the said Patrick McGuire, he has resided within the United States five years at least, and by the testimony of Andrew Hunter and Thomas H. Perdue, that he has resided within the State one year at least, and that during that time the said Patrick McGuire has behaved as a man of good moral character, attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States and well dispsed to hte good order and happiness of the same. And the said Patrick McGuire declared on oath in open Court that he will support the Constitution of the United States, and that he doth absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatever and particularly to Victoria the first Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and thereupon the said Patrick McGuire is admitted a citizen of the United States.
