November 6, 2023BIG HOGS AT BOLIVAR. — One of our patrons and old friends at Bolivar, (we will not mention his name because he is a very modest man, as well as very handsome,) gives us the following particulars which took place on a recent butchering day at that place, which will be read with much interest. Hear him:
“Friend Zittle– I think Bolivar is the banner district in the hog line this season. Things in the butchering way was very exciting here. Mr. Howard Smallwood had two hogs which were variously estimated at from six to eleven hundred; I think the first figures the nearest. The next on the carpet was Mike Boler, with four “slashing” hogs. He kind o’took the starch out of Smallwood. Boler strut around and looked victorious, judging from his general appearance, that is his strut, and from the top of his head you could see that it meant something. He smiled clear around to the back of his head. The next on the trapeze was John Flaherty– he took all the starch out of Boler with his big hog. Boler then struck a bee line for home having both his hands rammed in his breeches pockets up to the elbows and Flaherty occupying the champion ground. The next and last was Edward McGlone, the iron and bone man– he stepped in with the “Sandy Jack hog,” 20 months old, which tipped the beam at 709 pounds. We then looked around for Flaherty but he, like Boler, had left for home with his head down and his lip hanging down like a motherless colt. McGlone strut around like a Peacock on dress parade. Goodness, gracious, Brother Zittle, what “snassingers” they must have made.
