Virginia Coal (on the Potomac)

Virginia Coal.– The opinion is now gaining ground, that large bodies of coal, of a superior quality, exist on the banks of the Potomac river, near the finished parts of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. Some sample barrels of this coal have been recently sent to a mercantile house in Washington. A letter accompanying them, mentions that the strats generally lie at an elevation of 80 degrees, and that the deeper the workmen penetrate into them, the purer the coal is. The writer adds:– “only tell the People of the District to complete the Canal as far as the second dam above Harpers-Ferry, and have their money ready. I will insure them COAL for ages to come.”

The editors of the National Intelligencer having received a sample of the above coal, submitted it to the examination of an eminent scientific and practical chemist and geologist, whose report on its qualities is given in that paper, and is as favorable as could be expected from samples taken from so near the surface.
