June 12, 2026THE COURT HOUSE QUESTION.
The County Court of Jefferson decided on Monday week, in favor of building a new Court House in rear of the old one. Eighteen magistrates were present, and the vote stood, 10 to 8. A building committee was appointed, to prepare a plan, which is to be reported to the Court, and to superintend the erection of the building. It is the design of the Court to erect a plain, but commodious edifice– combining convenience and beauty in a degree creditable to the character of the county.
The present Court House was put up principally by private subscription– the levies of the county having been applied in but a very small proportion. The citizens will, therefore, not complain of a moderate tax for a purpose of such obvious utility. The county levy, however, has been quite light for several years– not withstanding the sum of $750 has been annually set apart (on interest) for the purpose just mentioned.
