Naturalization Intent: John Colgan

In the County Court
May Term 1855

County of Jefferson to wit:
At a court held for the said county on the 22nd day of May, 1855, John Colgan, an alien, who has lately arrived in the United States, and is ___ of being naturalized a citizen thereof, this day came into Court and made a report in these words and figures: I, John Colgan, make the following report of myself to the County Court of Jefferson County, in the State of Virginia, that is to say I report that I was born in King’s County, Ireland in the year 1825, being now in the 30th year of my age, that I am a subject of Victoria I Queen of Great Britain & Ireland, owing allegiance to that Monarch, and no other. That I migrated from Ireland to the United States in the year 1854, and that I intend to settle in Jefferson County in the State of Virginia, one of the United States. Given under my hand this 22nd day of May, 1855.

and the said John Colgan on the same day, declared on oath in open Court that it bonafide his intention to become a citizen of the United States, and to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State, or Sovereignty whatever, & particularly to Victoria I Queen of Great Britain.
