November 17, 2025DESERVING COLORED MAN.– Sigh Carter, one of the former slaves of the late Col. Braxton Davenport and one of his most trustworthy servants, has been visiting his old home within the past few days. Sigh is now living in Maryland, near Baltimore City, where, he informs us, he is doing well. Unlike the majority of his race, he takes little or no interest in politics, but devotes his entire time to his own material welfare and improvement, giving public matters but little concern. As an indubitable evidence of this fact, we may mention that he arrived here a day or two previous to the Maryland election, and was in this county, enjoying a pleasant reunion with his old friends, when that election took place. Bearing a reputation for honesty and industry, and exhibiting the most respectful and gentlemanly manner in all his intercourse with others, he has been invited by H. B. Davenport, Esq., to make his home, during his stay here, at the old homestead, and given many privileges for his personal enjoyment. Such colored men are an honor to their race, and their example may be well emulated. — Spirit.
