July 19, 2018Big Fire at Bakerton. A part of the lime-burning plant of the Washington Building Lime Company at Bakerton, this county, was destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. The fire started about 3 a. m., and seems to have originated in a pile of wood and thus communicated to the sheds in which the kilns were located. There are no facilities for fighting fire at Bakerton, and it was impossible to extinguish the blaze, which burned out when there was no more fuel to feed upon. Twelve kilns were destroyed in all, being the principal part of the original plant. That part of the works which includes the barrel factory and the grinding machinery was not burned, and there are a number of kilns, separated from the destroyed section, that are unharmed. The loss is estimated at about $20,000, which is covered by insurance with Washington, Alexander & Cooke, Charles Town.
