October 22, 2025Letter from Harper’s Ferry.
Messrs. Editors.– A short time ago some thief or thieves invaded the hennery of poor Billy Anderson, and abstracted therefrom eight valuable chickens of fancy blood. They came a few nights since and lifted three geese. If Sankey had been with Moody they would not have left a feather for poor Billy. Moody has a fine lip for chicken.
Mr. Howard Smallwood, living near here, and a railroad man, (you know railroads go by steam), expressed himself boldly that he had the “best yard dog in the county,” “would not give his dog for the best cow in the county, and thieves are welcome to all they could get at his house,” &c. A few nights after they paid Mr. S. a visit; they stole thirty chickens, and then stole his dog. A mighty good dog, Mr. S.
Mr. Pet Moler had a very fine hog killed in his yard a few nights since. He tracked the blood out towards Zion Church, and then lost the trail. They can’t tell which way it went– it might have gone to Tater Hill, or some other place.
Mr. Charles Engle was fattening a beef in the field next to his house. The thieves butchered it nicely, and then they divided it; giving Mr. Engle the blood and entrails for his share.
A few nights since Mr. Geo. W. Graham had a fine hog taken from his pen late at night. He tracked the blood for some distance, and then as usual lost the trail. The next day some boys were out rabbit hunting, and the dogs found a barrel buried in a field close to Moody’s house, with six pieces of pork, fresh killed, in it. Moody says the only thing that hurts him is that some people might think he knew something about it.
If any person wants shoats there are some parties here in the shoat business.
