HAGERSTOWN, Md., May 9. — William M. Smith, recently returned from Germany, where he had been held a prisoner for two years, met an instant death in an accident at the Bakerton quarries, near the Potomac river, by a donkey engine which he was operating. Smith misinterpreted a signal and ran into an open switch, the engine crashing into a draft of cars. Both of his legs were broken and he also sustained internal injuries from which he died later.
