Stewart: Instantly Killed
January 26, 2026Distressing Accident at Bakerton.
A very unfortunate accident occurred at Bakerton last Sunday afternoon, the victim of which was Raymond Hoffman, about thirteen years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Hoffman. Young Hoffman and another boy had sought shelter from a storm in the building in which is located the air compressor that is a part of the plant of the Washington Building Lime Company. Although warned of the danger of the place, the lad stumbled and in stretching out his hand to save himself he got it caught in the cog wheels of the compressor. In an instant his arm was drawn into the wheels and crushed almost to the shoulder. By some fortunate chance he managed to release himself, or he would have been drawn into the machinery and ground to pieces. The dreadfully injured boy was taken to his home and surgeons sent for. Drs. Perry and Bushong responded and amputated the arm near the shoulder. The lad, who showed great pluck and endurance through it all, stood the ordeal well, and it is hoped he will soon recover.
