Moler, High Yields due to Liming Fields
August 4, 2024Bakerton Beats Sharpsburg 11-9
August 4, 2024The quarries of the Standard Lime and Stone Company at Kearneysville have closed down, and the horses, mules and carts used there have been sent away. The workmen have dispersed to various sections– some going to Blairton, some to Millville, and others to Pennsylvania or wherever they can find work. Fifty or sixty men were discharged in all. The electric pump is still kept going to keep the water out of the quarries, and as long as this runs there is a chance that work will be resumed.

Work at the quarries of the Southern Limestone Company at Engle has been suspended, throwing about 40 men out of work. For the past two winters operations at the Southern quarries have been continuous, the stone gotten out going to the Bethlehem Steel Company’s plant at Sparrow’s Point near Baltimore for fluxing. A couple of weeks ago notice came from the Bethlehem Company that they had an abundance of fluxing stone for present needs, and that no more should be shipped until further notice.
The Potomac Lime and Stone Company’s employing about 40 men near Engle’s closed down December 1st, a month earlier than usual this year. Until this year the Potomac Company has been in operation up to Christmas. A few of the men from these two operations have secured employment at Bakerton, doing the same kind of work.
