May 22, 2020Joseph E. Thropp, owner of the Virginia ore bank, along the Potomac river east of town, bought two parcels of land, comprising 153 3-4 acres, being a part of the Antietam Iron Works property, on the Maryland side of the river. He paid $2,000 for it. Many years ago the ore from the Virginia ore bank was manufactured into iron products at the Antietam Iron Works, but the plant at the latter place has long since been demolished.
