October 6, 2024A Lady Dragged to Death.
A most shocking and horrible accident occurred Sunday in Washington county, Md., opposite Knott’s quarry, below this place. Miss Bettie Houser, in her 22nd year, living near Sample’s Manor Church, was out driving with a young lady friend and a gentleman named Mr. Arthur Myers. A horse attached to the buggy in which they were riding took fright at a traction engine and ran off. As the horse started to run away the buggy was overturned and the occupants were thrown out. One lady and Mr. Myers escaped unhurt, but Miss Houser became entangled in the lines and was dragged about three miles to the Mountain Lock, where the horse stopped. The body was horribly mangled. All the clothing save her corset was torn from her body, which presented a sickening sight. Miss Houser is of a well-known family and great sorrow is expressed at her tragic death. She lived about fifteen minutes after the accident. The deceased was a niece of Mr. Raleigh Houser, of Bakerton, this county, and grandniece of Mr. Mason Bennett, of this town. — Shepherdstown Independent.
