June 11, 2026We learn, with pleasure, that many farmers of this county cut their last crop of grain without using a drop of spiritous liquor in their fields.— They gave their hands 12 1/2 cents per day more than the wages in the fields where whiskey was used; and they found both pleasure and profit in it. Instead of confusion and disorder, a peaceful industry prevailed; and the harvesters themselves rejoiced that they proved able to resist the Evil Spirit so effectually. The beverage used as a substitute, was composed of vinegar and molasses, and half the usual quantity of water was drunk. They had no consuming fires in their stomachs to quench.
