December 27, 2025The Grand Jury after some time returned into Court and made the following Presentments: Virginia: Seventh District.– Thirteenth Circuit, Jefferson County Superior Court of Law and Chancery, to wit: The Jurors for the Commonwealth of Virginia, duly summoned to attend the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery, directed by law to be holden in and for the County of Jefferson, being one of the Counties composing the thirteenth Judicial Circuit aforesaid, upon their oath present, John Gibson and James Cathcart at Harpers Ferry in the County of Jefferson, for retailing spiritous Liquor without License and permitting the same to be drank on their premises when sold, within six months past, upon the information of Samuel Stone, Johnson Garrett, Matthew Garrett, Anderson Kidwell, and Robert Sheern, sworn to give evidence to the Grand Jury, at the request of the Grand Jury. We present Robert Delaney, Patrick McGuire, John Murphy, William Roach, Stephen Dunn, Daniel Fitzpatrick, and Mrs. Margaret Gibson, mother of Samuel Gibson, residing at Harpers Ferry, for retailing and selling spiritous Liquors without License and permitting the same to be drank at their residence houses when sold, also for permitting an unlawfulful assembling of negroes, and upon premises occupied by them within six months last past. Upon the information of Samuel Stone, Milton Garrett, Johnson Garnett, Robert Sheerer and Isaac Hinkle, sworn to give evidence to the Grand Jury, at the request of the Grand Jury. We present John Chambers, living at Hall Town in the county of Jefferson for retailing spiritous liquors without license and permitting the same to be drank at his house when sold within six months past, upon the information of Isaac Hinkle, sworn to give evidence to the Grand Jury at the request of the Grand Jury. We present James J. Miller, the Mayor of Charlestown for permitting unlawful assemblies of negroes to collect and remain at sundry places within the Corporation of Charlestown very much to the annoyance of the inhabitants of Charlestown, within six months last past upon the information of John J. H. Straich, James M. Ranson, and Thomas Rawlins, three of our own body, and John R. Flagg, sworn to give evidence to the Grand Jury at the request of the Grand Jury. George B. Beall Foreman” — The Grand Jury also made the following indictments: An indictment against John William Dalgan for an assault, a true bill. George B. Beall, Foreman. An Indictment against Patrick McGuire for an assault, a true bill. George B. Beall, Foreman. Whereupon it is ordered that the said John William Dalgan and Patrick McGuire, be summoned to appear here on the first day of the next Term to answer the said Indictments, and the Grand Jury having nothing further to present were discharged.
