August 4, 2024Bakerton is booming. This thriving town, which is located about half way between Shepherdstown and Harper’s Ferry, is the scene of lively operations just now. The Washington Building Lime Company, which has for years had its extensive quarries and lime kilns in operation there, are running at full blast in every department. Two new kilns have recently been built, and now a plant is being put up for the grinding of lime, a new experiment that the company is about to try. In addition to the vast amount of stone that is burned into lime there, four or five car-loads a day are being shipped to other points. Many car-loads of earth and refuse are also shipped each week, most of which is used by the B. & O. Railroad for grading and filling in at various points along its line. A large number of men are regularly employed at Bakerton, and all the neighborhood feels the benefit of the cash distributed there each week.
