Animosity Between Classes & Freedmen at Harpers Ferry

The Washington Star says: “We learn that the colored population at Harper’s Ferry now greatly outnumbers the white, and that considerable animosity exists between certain classes of the latter and the freedmen. A number of the returned Union soldiers a few days ago attempted to break up a colored prayer meeting, and on Saturday last they demolished a refreshment saloon kept at the ferry by an old man. An officer of the Freedman’s Bureau will doubtless be stationed at this point to look after the freedmen’s affairs.

We learn from an officer direct from Harper’s Ferry, that the Provost Marshal at that place reports that within the past week the men of his command (a portion of the 193d New York) stationed at Sandy Hook have been repeatedly fired upon from the Loudoun Heights, by concealed forces, supposed to be returned Rebel soldiers. Measures have been adopted to capture these miscreants, who will be treated as outlaws and summarily dealt with.”
