Flanagan Takes Over Bakerton Plant
December 20, 2025Washington Building Lime Company Chartered
December 21, 2025The first labor trouble in three years in this county came Thursday of last week, when the entire quarry force of the Southern Limestone Company at Engle quit work. About fifty men are involved. The strike was declared when the company ordered a reduction of hours from ten to nine, with a corresponding reduction in pay. The men had been working ten hours and were paid for eleven hours. Only a few men– three or four– are left at work, and they are engaged in removing earth from the quarry ledge with a steam shovel. Slackening in the demand for lime at war prices has resulted in a serious slowing down of work at the Washington Building Lime Company, at Bakerton. Only eight of the company’s thirty odd kilns are in operation. This means a big reduction in the number of men employed about the kilns.– Advocate.
