While in a fit of intoxication, Robert Shipley, an employee of the Virginia Ore Bank, four miles up the Potomac River from Harper’s Ferry, created a miniature riot on Sunday afternoon. Using a heavy piece of wire cable, Shipley knocked out John Moore, the ore bank superintendent. Then he directed his attention to a negro laborer, whom he struck with a stone. The negro was knocked unconscious for two hours. James Harding was the next victim slated to go down, but he saw Shipley first, and gave him a stunning kick in the stomach. Harding then got aboard of his assailant and held him down until officers from Harper’s Ferry came to arrest him. Justice Briggs gave Shipley a hearing on Monday afternoon, as a result of which he was sent to the Charles Town jail to await the action of the grand jury at the October term of court. — Advocate.
