[Special Dispatch to the Baltimore Sun.]
CHARLESTOWN, W. VA., Oct. 24.– There was a large gathering of democrats at Bakerton, Jefferson county, five miles north of Harper’s, last night. Notice had been given that soup would be served and democratic speakers would be on hand, and consequently all the democrats in that section of the county turned out. The Shepherdstown Cornet Band was present and enlivened the occasion. The crowd was too large to be accommodated in the schoolhouse, so the speaking took place out of doors. The meeting was presided over by Mr. C. E. Lamar, member of the executive committee. Speeches were made by Col. R. P. Chew, Hon. W. B. Cornwell, of Hampshire county; Hon. A. S. Dandridge, nominee for the House of Delegates from Jefferson county, and Mr. Benj. Trapwell and J. M. Mason, Jr., attorneys, of Charlestown. The meeting was the largest ever held at Bakerton, and the great enthusiasm showed that the democrats of that section are taking an active interest in the campaign.
The democratic executive committee of Jefferson county held a meeting in the courthouse at this place yesterday evening and transacted important business in preparation for the election. The committee appointed two active democrats in each of the nineteen voting precincts in the county to take charge of such voters as have no way to get to the poles and to see that they are enabled to get to their voting place. A committee of five from Charlestown precinct was appointed to look after absent voters. The committee reported the outlook in the county very favorable for democracy.
One of the unusual sights of Charleston is to see the Kanawha woolen mills in a blaze of light and running at full capacity long after the usual hour for closing. This is something that has not been necessary for years.
