Fire at Bakerton: Kilns and Freight Cars Destroyed

Lime Kilns and Freight Cars Destroyed.

The valuable lime kilns of the Washington Building Lime Company at Bakerton, near Martinsburg, W. Va. were destroyed by fire at 4 o’clock yesterday morning, entailing a loss of between $10,000 and $15,000. The kilns were the latest improved iron kilns and nothing is left standing but the shells. At one time it was feared that the store house and dwellings of the workmen would be destroyed, but they were saved. Eight B & O. freight cars were destroyed, however, and the woodwork of the kilns. The fire was of accidental origin the woodwork being ignited from one of the kilns. The company will at once rebuild and resume operations. Mr. Joseph D. Baker, of Frederick, and his brothers, of Buckeystown, this county, are largely interested in the enterprise and yesterday visited the scene of the fire. The loss is almost fully covered by insurance in foreign companies and the Lime Company owns other kilns about three miles from those destroyed, which are in operation and from which they will be able to supply their trade.
