Brooks Robinson, Rome Schwagel Will Appear At Dinner
Roy “Tubby” Stotler will receive the Independent Baseball League’s Most Valuable Player award at its annual post season banquet Saturday night at the Boonsboro Fire Hall.
Stotler, who formerly played minor league ball in the Baltimore Oriole organization, was the key man in Funkstown’s drive toward another Independent League pennant this past summer. The player’s manager was second in the batting race with a healthy .439 average, tied for the loop lead in runs scored (27), led in home runs (11) and was second in the RBI department (27).
In addition to receiving the Thomas Distributing Co. award as the Most Valuable Player, Stotler will accept the Cocoa Cola trophy for copping the homer title. He’s the only player who will receive more than one award at the banquet.
Independent League proxy Chief Holmes announced that Oriole third baseman Brooks Robinson will be the guest speaker. Popular Rome Schwagel will act as a master of ceremonies for the second straight year.
The banquet scheduled to get underway at 6:30 p.m. is open to the public. Tickets at $1.50 per person can be purchased from Holmes.
Williamsport’s Dave Hanna was named rookie of the year and will receive the Bob Potts award donated by C. Morrison.
Alvin Russell of Bakerton was named recipient of the sportsmanship trophy, donated by Earl Springer.
Williamsport’s Jim Jennings will receive the Senior McFadden trophy for leading the league in hitting. Joe Anderson, also of Williamsport, was selected manager of the year with Larkin Wholesale Co. donating the award.
Jim Snyder of Funkstown and Bob Taylor of Williamsport will receive the two pitching trophies. Snyder gets the John Williamson trophy for the best pitching, percentage (7.4) while Taylor accepts the Warrenholtz Tree Experts award for pacing the league in strikeouts.
Semter-McFaddin is also presenting the award to Funkstown for finishing first during the regular season. The other team trophy, donated by Potomac Edison, goes to Williamsport for winning the playoffs.
