May 20, 2020Mr. George W. Caton, a well-known resident of this vicinity, died on Christmas day at his home near the cement mill, a mile or two below town. Mr. Caton had been in bad health for a long time, suffering from dropsy and heart trouble. He was an honest, upright man, sturdy in character as he was in body, and all who knew him respected him. He was a brave and useful soldier in the Confederate army during the civil war, and many deeds of daring are told of him. He was a member of Company D, Twelfth Virginia Cavalry, commanded by Major Knott. He is survived by his widow, two sons and five daughters. The funeral was held in the Southern Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. J. L. Kibler, and the remains were interred in Elmwood Cemetery. The pallbearers were J. M. Hendricks, Capt. Lee H. Moler, W. J. Knott, A. P. Reinhart, Geo. W. Osbourn, and Wm. W. Myers.
