THE VIRGINIA ELECTION.
The election of Mr. Wise, says the Washington Organ, is generally conceded although there are nearly fifty counties yet to be heard from.
It is hardly probable that Mr. Flournoy has gained enough to elect him. It will be found when all the returns are in that the vote has been unusually large. In twelve counties from which we have received the aggregate vote, the increase on both sides, over the vote of 1852 is some 2,200– an average of 183 in each county. This ratio of increase, if continued through the State, will give a total increase of from 25,000 to 30,000 votes in the whole State.
We are also informed by an intelligent Virginia Democrat that there are 10,000 Irish laborers in the public works in that State who have voted at this election for the first time; and all of them for the Wise ticket. There are from 3,000 to 4,000 of these laborers on the Blue Ridge Tunnel in Augusta alone, 340 Irish laborers came to the polls and voted for Wise. On the Virginia and Tennessee Road, in S. W. Virginia, there are several thousand foreign votes cast against us.
It is also stated by gentlemen in whom we have the fullest confidence that, in several counties, large numbers of Democrats, joined on the day of election for the [?] and voted for the Democratic candidates. This is in accordance with the statements of Mr. Wise himself, who openly boasted of this fact!
