Artful Declaration against Irish Landlords
June 14, 2026Ireland/Britain/U.S.: Tyranny in Preservation of Union Measures
June 14, 2026Irish Suppression Bill.– The latest intelligence from England shows a probability amounting almost to certainty that this desperate expedient– which even many of its advocates acknowledge to be high-handed and unconstitutional– will receive the assent of Parliament. It appears almost as certain that the result of such a measure, at this time, when the spirit of resistance to arbitrary power has been encouraged by so many triumphs, will be a civil war. In truth the people of Ireland have now no reason to dread such a contest. It could hardly render their condition worse than it actually is, either in point of suffering or danger. It appears that in a single county, during the space of seven months, there were 7 murders, 14 attempts at assassination, 119 aggravated assaults, 78 robberies, and 30 conflagrations. War, in the most fearful aspect, can have no terrors for a people who are accustomed to such a state of things as this, and who are driven by their sufferings to an utter recklessness of life. {Balt.
