Greencastle scored five runs in the fifth inning and went on to trim Bakerton, 7-3, in the Independent League yesterday.
It was the first meeting of the year between the new clubs in the circuit and the win gave Greencastle a 2-0 record and a tie for first place. Bakerton has dropped its first two tilts.
Greencastle clung to a slim 2-1 lead until the fifth when it combined four singles and a pair of walks for the runs. Tom Jackson, Skeeter Burger, Terry Sellers and winning pitcher Cy Keefer contributed the base-hits.
Left-hander Keefer went all the way on the mound, scattering eight safelles and encountered trouble only with S. Hough who belted a pair of round trippers. Hough blasted his first homer in the fifth to give the losers their initial tally and then connected again in the seventh with the sacks empty.
Bakerton’s other run came in the sixth on Anderson’s two-bagger and a pair of fielder’s choices.
Greencastle took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when R. Gordon singled and Jackson followed with a four-bagger. Jackson also had a single and double in addition to his homer to lead the Greencastle attack.
The Pennsylvanians have now walloped six home runs in their first two contests.
Terry Sellers contributed two hits for the winners while Hough, G. Jamison and R. Jamison collected two each for Bakerton.
