The limestone and dolomite in this abandoned quarry are probably the same type of rocks that are quarried extensively at Bakerton and Engle and further south at Millville This same formation contains some beds of marble. Take note of the solution cavities many of which are filled with red clays. The rock formations from here to Harpers Ferry are not well understood due to the great amount of faulting encountered. (See Geologic Map.)
Turn left to Orebanks.
Stop 5
The lowest and oldest member of the limestone group is composed of hard blue siliceous limestone, gray dolomite, and brown limestone with some shale. Residual iron ores are associated with the blue limestone and dolomite. Until about 1918 iron ore (40-45% metallic iron) had been removed from large open pits at Orebank. The demand for this ore declined with the influx of Great Lake Ore. (See Geologic Map.)
