The people of Hampshire have long had it in contemplation, to improve the road leading through that county, from the National Road beyond Cumberland, to Smithfield in this county, so as to afford them the means of transporting their produce to Baltimore, and attracting the wagons and travellers, from the west. We call upon them now to commence the work, inasmuch as a sufficient sum has been subscribed, not only for the road between Smithfield and Harpers-Ferry, but also for the entire distance from Harpers-Ferry to Frederickstown, Md., thus filling up the whole of the direct route to Baltimore.
We anticipate the pleasure of seeing this road a great thoroughfare. The facilities for crossing the Potomac, afforded by the bridge at Harpers-Ferry; the curiosities at that place, both natural and artificial, the beautiful country through which the road passes, and above all, the circumstance that the route is a direct one, will hold out great inducements to travellers. We hope the work will be prosecuted with energy both in Maryland and Virginia.
