May 1, 2024Store Burns At Bakerton Loss $25,000
There was a destructive fire at Bakerton, Jefferson county, early Tuesday morning when the general merchandise store of C. D. Carter was entirely destroyed, together with the big stock of goods that it contained. The fire was discovered about 3 o’clock in the morning and the alarm was given at once. By the time the people of the village were aroused, however, the building was a mass of flames and it was impossible to enter it or save any of its contents. A fusilade of explosions from ammunition in the store acted further as a deterrent. As there is no water supply or fire apparatus at Bakerton, there was absolutely no chance to save the building or contents, and the whole thing went up in smoke, with no salvage whatever.
The total loss is estimated at $18,000 to $25,000. Mr. Carter carried an insurance of $15,800 on building and stock. Of this amount $5,000 was on the building which was a one-story structure of hollow tile; $500 was on a shed adjoining; and the balance on the stock of merchandise and a refrigerating plant.
