An Old Ore Bank.
Mr. A. G. Lewis, of Sandy Hook, Md., president of the Board of Commissioners for Washington county, is superintending operations at the old Ahl iron mines, several miles from Harper’s Ferry, along the Potomac river, near Bakerton.
About 700 tons of high-grade ore are taken out of the mines every month. Forty-two hands are employed. The pay roll aggregates $1,200 a month. The ore is shipped to Dunbar, Pa., where it is smelted.
The mines have been worked as far back as 1776. At present the mines are being worked by the Hagerstown (Md.) Bank, which has an interest in them.
