June 11, 2026After our last paper was put to press, a case of Cholera occurred in town, which proved fatal.– The subject was an intemperate old woman who had formerly been in the poor-house, and who by her habits, frequently brought on common cholera.
Since Thursday last, no case bearing the slightest resemblance to cholera, has occurred. The town is unusally healthy; and all the vague reports, which have been spread upon the wings of the wind, had scarcely the shadow of a foundation.
As an evidence of the salubrity of our atmosphere, we may mention, that from 20 to 30 workmen, (strangers,) have been employed upon our turnpike, in the heart of the town, not one of whom has been attacked with the dreaded malady; and for the last two weeks, not one of the twenty now engaged, has lost an hour by any sort of sickness.
A letter written from “Jefferson County, Va,” has appeared in most of the newspapers, giving a most erroneous colouring to the circumstances which the writer attempted to detail. A casual reader would be led to infer that the Cholera had been raging at Harpers-Ferry; and, indeed, that the whole “garden spot” had been ravaged by disease. The writer ought to have been more particular in his details; he ought to have stated that nearly all cases which occurred, were on the line of the Canal in Maryland, and not at Harpers-Ferry. That village has not been so free from disease for the last twelve years; and the whole county has been unusually favored with health this season.
We believe we may safely say, that not a case of malignant disease now exists in the county of Jefferson.
