Harpers Ferry Laborers in Short Supply
January 6, 2026Death Notice: Infant Bowers
January 6, 2026The furnace at Antietam, near Sharpsburg, known as the Antietam Iron Works, was put in blast last Thursday, the 19th inst., after standing idle for several years. Superintendent B. K. Goodyear’s daughter, Miss Oro Blanche Goodyear, applied the torch on that day, at 6 1/2 o’clock P. M., which has warmed up into new life the dormant activities of the furnace and made everything around glow and blaze with energy and animation.
The Messrs. Ahl have employed as founder Mr. Jesse Zimmerman, of Harrisburg, Pa., a man of large experience in making iron. This is a happy event for the people of that place as there are many men there who depend on the works to earn support for their families. They are now cheerful and happy, with a better prospect for the future before them.
The Messrs. Ahl have a good furnace, with every facility for making pig iron of a good quality. They own two excellent ore banks, one known as the Virginia ore bank, situated 5 1/2 miles from the furnace, down the river, on the south bank of the Potomac. The other is known as the Maryland ore bank, seven miles from the furnace on the bank of the C. & O. Canal. The Virginia ore bank is now in active operation, and the Maryland bank will be in full operation in a short time. The necessary machinery is now being erected for washing ore. The two ores combined make a good quality of iron which finds ready market at good prices.
