Death Notice: Charles Flannagan
December 20, 2025Lime Demands Slow.
December 20, 2025SUIT AGAINST THE RAILROADS.
C. V. R. R. and Others Alleged to Discriminate Against the Standard Lime & Stone Co.
The Standard Lime & Stone Co. and the Washington Building Lime Co., operating quarries near Martinsburg, both of which corporations and companies have offices in Baltimore, have filed a complaint before the interstate commerce commission against the Cumberland Valley railroad, the Pennsylvania railroad, the Baltimore, Chesapeake and Atlantic, the Maryland, Delaware and Virginia and a number of other roads accepting the product of these companies from the Cumberland Valley railroad.
The Standard Lime and Stone Co. quarries limestone and manufactures lime at Martinsburg, and the Washington Building Lime Co. operates limestone quarries at Bakerton and also at Engle, W. Va. The complaint is that the Cumberland Valley railroad has put into force rates which seriously discriminate against the Martinsburg plants in favor of plants at Bunker Hill, this county, and it is charged in the complaint that the railroad company has refused to remedy the grievance of these two corporations on the ground that it has the right to make such rates “for the express purpose of establishing a lime and limestone enterprise at Bunker Hill.”
