Bishop Kain and the Incendiary Press.
“Bishop Kain has prohibited the West Virginia Catholics from taking the Irish World.”
The above paragraph has been floating around in the papers for several days without any statement as to where the information came from or why the prohibition was made.
In his Lenton Pastoral Bishop Kain spoke against papers whose rabid tone was injurious to the community, but he did not mention any of them by name. He did not hesitate to give his reasons privately, or say that the principal paper he objected to was the Irish World. The reasons for taking the ground he does, are that, the World’s attacks upon the English government are couched in such bitter invectives, are so incendiary in their tone, that they serve to stir up and increase the hatred of Irishmen for England in a most senseless manner, and are in direct opposition to the spirit of Christianity. Such attacks are out of place in this age when the spirit of religious toleration is stronger and more liberal than ever before. Not only is the Irish World malicious toward the British Government, but the Bishop says it also frequently attacks the Catholic Church, and publishes articles which are without truth, and injurious to the religious world.
We think the Bishop’s reasoning is good, and his action in this matter is certainly commendable.
