Irish Temperance Pledge Statistics

The N. Y. Correspondent of the National Intelligencer, writing under date of 25th March, says:–

Of the many events just now going on, none is more worthy of notice than the Temperance feeling which prevails here, especially among the Irish population.– The reformation almost exceeds conception, and far outstrips the most ambiguous calculations of the friends of temperance. In New England, in some places where there is an Irish population of 2,400, 2,000 have taken the pledge. In Brooklyn, 3,000 Catholics have pledged themselves to abstain totally, and the statistics here will show a state of things quite as marvellous.

The number of temperance pledges which have been taken in Ireland amount to four millions six hundred thousand.— We hope soon to be able to record double the number as having taken the pledge in the United States. [U. S. Gazette
