Bolivar Teacher Fires Four Shots At Night Intruder
[Special Dispatch to the Baltimore Sun.]
Harpers Ferry, W. Va., Oct. 15.– Miss Jesse Cockrell, a teacher in the Bolivar School, near Harpers Ferry, pluckily fired four shots from a revolver at a negro who stole upon the porch of her home, where some clothing was hanging on a line.
For some time petty thieving has been going on in that locality, and to protect herself and mother Miss Cockrell procured a revolver. Between 4 and 5 o’clock in the morning she heard footsteps on the porch. Picking up her revolver, she made an investigation. While in the yard she caught sight of the negro on the porch and fired at him. He started to run and was followed by Miss Cockrell, who fired three more shots at him.
Later Constable Cater arrested Henry Keys, living at Bakerton, on suspicion, and after awhile the negro confessed, saying, however, he was in search of a handkerchief to carry apples. He was sent to jail.
