Health of Harpers Ferry
June 16, 2024Mass Discharge from Armory
June 16, 2024THE CHOLERA NEAR HARPER’S FERRY.– The Charlestown Spirit of Jefferson, of yesterday, has the following in reference to the re-appearance of the cholera in the neighborhood of Harper’s Ferry:
Without any apparent local causes, and without any warning of its approach, it suddenly made its appearance on Friday evening last, in the town of South Bolivar. From that date to the present time eight persons have fallen ‘neath the “swift-winged arrow of Death.” As far as we can learn they were as follows: On Friday afternoon and night, Mrs. N. O. Allison, daughter and child; Mrs. Wiggington, Mrs. Amos, Mrs. Ternan, a child of Wm. Graham, not known whether cholera or not, and Ailsey Ball, a colored woman; and on Sunday evening Mr. Mitchell, all of whom resided in South Bolivar. We learn that there is much sickness prevailing in Harper’s Ferry, other than that originating from the cholera.
Business is still progressing, but the desolation created by this awful visitation has chilled all hearts; a deep gloom, like a weight, is resting upon the feelings of the whole community.
