May 1, 2024Murderer of Fireman Gray Landed In Hagerstown Jail.
James Ellis, alias “Nigger Jim” Semple, who shot and killed Fireman Charles Gray at Weverton Saturday night, was captured at Bakerton, Jefferson county, Tuesday, and returned to Sheriff Deibert, of Hagerstown, who landed him in jail at the latter place. Superintendent Millard, of the Bakerton quarries, captured the negro and locked him up in a shanty, pending the arrival of officers. The negro at first denied that he was the murderer of Fireman Gray, but later confessed that he was the man wanted.
He claimed that the shooting was in self-defense, but professed to be ignorant of the fact that he had killed Fireman Gray. There was a reward of $50 for the capture of the negro, and this will be turned over to Mr. Millard.
